Chapter fourteen

Ipulled the door open and stepped inside, dripping water everywhere. Not wanting to make a mess, I dropped my new cloaks on the floor, then pulled off my sodden one and hung it on the back door. My eagerness to see Brinia was tempered by my desire not to flood her house. I pulled my boots off as well, so I wouldn’t track mud any further.

“James!” Brinia shouted as the door that separated her house from her shop slammed open. She came charging across the floor, massive breasts bouncing with each step, and practically tackled me.

The pain in my ribs was intense, but I dealt with it for now. Having Brinia in my arms again was worth the pain. After a moment though, I loosed my hold on her and let her know I had several broken ribs. She let go immediately.

“By the gods, are you alright?” She took my face in her hands and stared up at me. “Of course you’re not, look at you. You look like you got in a fight with a stone wall and lost.”

“Not far from the truth,” I said, my grin showing off my two missing teeth.

She winced upon seeing that, but leaned up and kissed me, very softly.

“It’s good to see you, Brinia. I came as fast as I could. Lyanna helped me escape.”

“Oh, James,” Brinia said, embracing me again, but this time carefully so as not to irritate my ribs. It still hurt—breathing hurt, for fuck’s sake—but I didn’t care.

It suddenly dawned on her that I was soaking wet. She pulled at the laces on my shirt.

“Let’s get you out of these and into something dry and warm,” she said. Her eyes went wide when I managed to peel my wet shirt off and she saw my body.

My eyes followed hers, to my body. My entire right side was black and purple. I looked like absolute hell.

“Come on,” she said, pulling me towards the small fireplace. She added a fresh log to it and poked at it, sending a flurry of sparks up the chimney.

I stood there for a moment, my shivering finally starting to subside. Brinia pulled at the laces of my breeches and helped me out of those as well.

“You’re soaked to the bone,” she exclaimed. “Did you decide to go for a swim?”

“A swim might have been more pleasant,” I said, enjoying the warmth of the fire on my bare body. I turned slowly, like meat on a spit, getting the chill out of my bones.

“Does it hurt?” She asked, tracing a finger along my side. She was careful to trace around my injuries and not actually touch them.

“Only every time I move, or breathe,” I replied.

Sadness covered her face and she stepped up to me, carefully wrapping her arms around me.

“I missed you,” I said as I kissed the top of her head.

“And I you. I was afraid I would never see you again. I had even spoken with Orthur about having a funeral for you.”

“Sorry to disappoint, but I’m here,” I chuckled, then winced.
